Also near the Imprimerie is the church St. Cristophe de Javel - a reminder that in the early 1900s, the 15th arrondisement (our neighborhood) was home to chemical factories, including the one where bleach was invented. In French, the word for bleach is Javel - named after an old village that pre-dates the annexation of the 15th to the city of Paris. |

We continued our long walk through the lower part of the 15th, which isn't a lovely architecturally, but it has its moments -- such as this hollyhock garden in front of a modern apartment building. |

In
trying to find an old favorite restuarant, Le Vieux Pressoir, we rediscovered this
Portugese restaurant that we had wanted to try last year. It was about 8pm by then,
so we went in and asked for a table. We were not disappointed. This was the
first Portugese restaurant either of us had ever been to -- another type of opportunity
that is easily found in a city like Paris, where the entire world seems to gather.
We noticed a Franco Portuguese bank around the corner from here. We've been told
that there is a large Portugese group in the 15th arrondisement. Some of them joined
us as the restaurant filled to capacity on this Saturday evening. This place is located on a short street by the same name, in the bottom of the 15th. |

I
saw these cute dog cups in a shop on the way home. If anyone wants some, speak up. (Last year I was accused of including too many cat pictures; so I'm trying to balance out with dog images this time.) |

We aren't totally irresponsible. Tom is attending sessions of the Henry James Society convention which is here from Friday through Tuesday. Here he chats with longtime friend Martha Banta who was last night's keynote speaker. Tom had lunch with Martha and others on Friday, too, and had a great time catching up on things with her. |

The familiar Eiffel Tower guided us home after Martha's talk. |
