After working at the computers, we wandered around and around in the Luxembourg Gardens yesterday, until we finally decided we were a little too cold to continue.  We settled into reading the French and American newspapers for a while in the apartment, and then it was time for dinner.

We’d walked past Le Café Tournon earlier in the afternoon and noticed that they had aile de raie on the blackboard of daily specials.  It is one of my favorite seafoods, skate, and it was to be served with capers.  I couldn’t resist.  Tom made a reservation for 7:30.

When we arrived, there was no need for us to say our name.  The server welcomed us and gestured toward our table.

To start, we shared a rillettes de canard (a duck terrine), one of the starters listed on the blackboard.  It was two slices – perfect for sharing – and a nice little pile of cornichons plus a nice little green salad with vinaigrette.  It came with a healthy basket of Poilane bread.

When the main courses arrived, I was delighted.  The raie was a healthy, thicker than usual serving, and with it was a wonderful light brown sauce with some zing to it, instead of the usual beurre blanc sauce.  The capers were present in abundance, and there were several pommes vapeur (oval steamed white potatoes), and even a few pieces of sun-dried tomatoes.

Tom also ordered one of the daily specials, a super lean, big pork chop that came with a generous pile of tiny green peas.

In addition to the delicious food, one of the things I appreciate about Le Tournon is that they serve a good variety of wines by the glass.  I like the white wine from the Domaine des Schistes, near the foothills of the Pyrenees.

We were very satisfied NOT to have dessert.  What a wonderful, quiet dinner!  We went home and made an early evening of it, deciding not to stay out until midnight listening to live jazz.

Today’s entry will be short because it is the weekend for les Journees du Patrimoine – Patrimony Days.  We have a list of places to be.
